Horizontal and vertical reservations
Vertical reservation is the reservation made for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes. Horizontal reservation is the reservation made for other beneficiary categories like women, persons with disability (PwDs), veterans, trangender community, etc. that cut across vertical categories. The horizontal reservation quota is applied separately to each vertical category. Recently in the Saurav Yadav case, the Supreme Court clarified the position of law on how these two reservations are applied together.
