Super Gonorrhea

Super Gonorrhea is caused when gonorrhea-causing  Neisseria gonorrhoeae develops a high level of resistance to the antibiotics used to treat the infection – azithromycin and ceftriaxone. There has been an increase in super gonorrhea infections due to the overuse of azithromycin and the lack of service to treat sexually transmitted infections during the COVID-19 pandemic. A new study found that adding azithromycin to existing standard COVID-19 care regimens did not improve outcomes.
